There are many dog friendly places local to Helsbury Park, a lot of them are
identified and recommended by us and our visitors, we regularly update this
list as new places come to our attention. Dexter [our old dog] has given each
place a rating out of 5 for your reference.
1. Daymer Bay
This lovely beach is often mentioned by our visitors as their favourite
place on the north coast. It has great facilities and is totally dog
friendly. the walks on the coastal path in either direction are spectacular.
Easy parking, dog bins, a number of walks, cafe and lots of beach at high or
low tide. Daymer is about a 30 minute drive from Helsbury Park, just the
other side of Wadebridge between Rock and Polzeath.
On the other side of the Camel estuary Trevone is a nice small beach and the start of a stunning walk up to Stepper Point, mind
the blow hole though! Nice little beach with dog bins and easy access.
Trevone is the other side of Padstow on a stunning bit of coast line towards
Newquay, about a 45 minute drive from Helsbury Park.
3. Camel Trail
The trail is noted by many visitors to Cornwall, the upper reaches are lovely for dog walking, the start of the trail
at Wenford bridge is less than a mile from Helsbury Park. Lots of dog bins,
easy walking, tons of trees and of course the river to play in and drink
This stunning stately home has lots of marked dog walking trails in the woods and grounds around the house. It lies a few
miles from Helsbury Park on the road towards Bodmin. Very quiet with lots of
interesting paths, trees and water.
5. Cardinham Woods
Well marked and easy walking in lush woodland, good facilities including toilets, cafe, parking and picnic area.
Loads of trees to wee on and lots of dog bins. Cardinham is off the road
between Bodmin and Liskeard, about a 40 minute drive from Helsbury Park.
A spectacular walk on Bodmin Moor up and around Roughtor, with views of both coasts on a clear day.
A long walk with lots of interesting climbs. Sometimes sheep so may need to
stay on the lead. Roughtor is best accessed via Camelford, its about a 20
minute drive from Helsbury Park.
A lovely spot near St Breward on the moor, only known to a few locals and regular visitors, it is a little oasis on the De Lank River. Great for
young kids and a spot of kite flying. No dog facilities and the road is
close but lovely cool water and grass to run on. This is only about a 10
minute drive from Helsbury Park, but if you are keen you could walk to it,
stopping at the Old Inn in St Breward.
8. Trebarwith Strand
A lovely beach at low tide, with secluded spots amongst the rocks and sandy bays, great pub
(Port William) that serves wonderful crab and lobster salads on the terrace
overlooking the beach, good parking facilities. One dog bin and only a short
beach, parking is a walk away, lots of rocks to climb and pools to play in.
This is the nearest beach to Helsbury Park, about a 20 minute drive.
9. Helsbury Park itself...
The walks on the land at Helsbury Park are as dog friendly as you can get, with
50 acres of pasture and 50 acres of woodland, 1 mile of river frontage and
the pond - it just doesn't get any better than that. No need for a lead most
of the time and thousands of places to explore!
10. Lanhydrock Parkland
Suggested by Maureen Fleming, there are a variety of walks,
including the parkland and river frontage. Apparently there are plenty of
dog bins and poo bags available too. Sounds great - Thanks Maureen. Lanhydrock is just the other side of Bodmin to Helsbury, about a 25 minute
drive, its a stunning National trust property.
"Thank you once again, we'll be coming back to Helsbury Park, hopefully for a week next time!
Love receiving your newsletters - it reminds us how wonderful it is there. We also love the attention you pay to dogs and their needs, it is just as important for our dogs to have a great time."
"Just a short note to say how much we all enjoyed our stay at Helsbury Park last week. The
holiday cottage and facilities were first class and your grounds were all enjoyed immensely by us all (Lottie our Chocolate Brown Labrador particularly liked the river at the bottom of the field)."
"Just wanted to let you know we've just come back from a very enjoyable stay at Helsbury Park. The weather was not great, but
Westhayes and the views made up for the lack of sunshine. We thoroughly enjoyed walking around the park and our dog's tail did not stop wagging."
