Local Beaches

Who said ‘Life’s a Beach’? The phrase is trotted out regularly in the press but here in North Cornwall it really is true.  Ask people to describe their perfect day at the beach and you’ll probably get many different answers.  That’s not a problem around here, there is a beach for everyone and a beach for all seasons. North Cornwall is blessed with a number of the best dog friendly beaches in Cornwall and many of them are near Helsbury. In other parts of Cornwall this is not always the case where only one of the many beaches may actually allow dogs.

If a wide expanse of golden sand is your thing try Harlyn or Widemouth Bay, for cosmopolitan people watching there’s Rock or if you want to escape the crowds Bossiney may be your Haven.  On the other hand if you want to learn an exhilarating new sport Watergate Bay is the place to go while Crackington Haven will keep rock-poolers happy for hours.  Polzeath has a little something for everyone and Daymer Bay is voted dog-friendliest by our guests on a regular basis.  There are sand dunes to slide down at Constantine or just sit on high at the Port William Inn and look down on the action at Trebarwith Strand with a drink and some excellent food.

The beaches of north Cornwall are renowned for their beautiful sand, spectacular landscapes and multitude of sporting opportunities. It’s also worth knowing that practically every beach on the north coast is dog friendly for most of the year.

Our guests love going to Daymer Bay which is on the estuary of the river Camel opposite Padstow, you can walk in either direction depending on the tide. The South West Coastal path takes you round to Polzeath, or you can walk along the estuary to Rock where there are plenty of great eateries as well as a boat to Padstow. The beaches on the opposite side of the estuary are remote and serene and well worth the walk.

Near to home

Nearer to home there is dog friendly Trebarwith Strand which is near Tintagel and is set in a wonderfully dramatic valley which leads you down to the sea, keeping an eye on the tide is always advisable but its well worth the trip. North of Helsbury you have Crackington Haven, Widemouth and Bude which are all easy to get to with good amenities and spectacular views.

Beyond Padstow there is Trevone, Harlyn, Constantine, Treyarnon and the amazing Bedruthan Steps, with Watergate Bay as the final stop on the road to Newquay you cant want for a better day out on the coast. There are obviously wonderful beaches further afield including at Perranporth, St Agnes, Hayle and St Ives but we are so well served by superb beaches here in north Cornwall that there’s no need to go to far.
