What Does Truly Dog-Friendly Holiday Accommodation Look Like?
At Helsbury Park, being dog-friendly means more than simply allowing dogs through the door. It means giving them — and their humans — the freedom to enjoy a proper holiday together.
Finding a holiday cottage that accepts dogs isn’t particularly difficult these days. Finding somewhere that genuinely welcomes them, gives them space to explore and makes life easier for their owners can be a different matter. We know this because dogs have always been at the heart of what we do at Helsbury Park. We also know that not all dog-friendly holidays are created equal.
When you start looking at the details of dog-friendly accommodation, you discover quite how much the experience can vary. There may be limits on the number of dogs you can bring, additional charges for each pet, restrictions on when you can visit, or rules that make it difficult to relax and enjoy your surroundings. None of these arrangements is necessarily unreasonable — every property has its own practical considerations. But they can make a real difference to the holiday you ultimately have.
At Helsbury Park, we’ve taken a rather different approach.
Bring the dogs. All of them.
For many people, dogs aren’t an optional extra to a family holiday. They’re part of the family, and leaving one or more behind can be difficult. That’s why we don’t charge extra for dogs. Nor do we impose a fixed maximum number. Whether you’re travelling with one much-loved companion or a whole pack, we want you to be able to enjoy your holiday together.
Over the years, we’ve welcomed guests with four and five dogs, including some rather impressive collections of Golden Retrievers and Springer Spaniels. We understand that travelling with several dogs can narrow your choice of accommodation considerably. At Helsbury, you don’t have to compromise on the size of your canine family to enjoy a stay in a beautiful Cornish cottage.
Space to be a dog
Perhaps the biggest difference at Helsbury Park is the space.
Our cottages sit within almost 100 acres of private grounds, including ancient woodland, meadows and pasture, with the River Camel running through the estate. There are walks straight from the accommodation, with different routes to explore and plenty of opportunity to enjoy the countryside without having to load everyone into the car. For dogs who love a good sniff, an energetic walk or simply being outside with their people, it’s a wonderful setting. And for owners, there’s a particular pleasure in being able to step outside and start exploring immediately. You don’t need to drive to a walking route or spend your holiday searching for somewhere suitable to exercise the dogs.
The grounds aren’t simply a pretty view from the cottage. They’re part of the holiday itself.
The little things that make a difference
We know that a successful dog-friendly holiday is often made up of the details that make travelling easier.
We provide a range of useful dog essentials, including bowls, throws, treats and poo bags, with crates and other equipment available to borrow. There are enclosed outdoor areas where available, external kennels and a dog-sitting arrangement for guests who need a little help during their stay. These details matter because a holiday should feel like a break, not an exercise in packing everything you own.
Of course, every dog is different, and owners know their own animals best. Our aim is to make bringing them along as straightforward and enjoyable as possible.
A proper holiday for the humans, too
There’s an important distinction between accommodation that tolerates dogs and accommodation where the whole experience has been designed with them in mind.
But there’s an equally important distinction between a dog-friendly holiday and a holiday that’s enjoyable for everyone. At Helsbury, you don’t have to sacrifice comfort, character or facilities simply because you’re travelling with dogs. Marhayes and Westhayes each sleep six, and both offer comfortable accommodation in a peaceful countryside setting. There’s also our indoor heated swimming pool, alongside a sauna, gym and games facilities. While some members of the group head out for a walk, others can swim, relax or enjoy time at the cottage.
It’s one of the reasons Helsbury works so well for families and groups with different ages, interests and, of course, dogs. One guest described the facilities for both “2 legs and 4 legs” as second to none. Another told us that the grounds were so good for their dogs that they found it difficult to justify leaving.
We think those comments capture something important about Helsbury: the dogs are genuinely welcome, but the people haven’t been forgotten.
Do you even need to leave?
Cornwall has wonderful beaches, coastal walks, villages and places to explore, and Helsbury is well placed for discovering them. We’re around 20 minutes from the coast, with plenty of opportunities for days out.
But one of the things our guests often tell us is how much they enjoy simply staying put. When you’ve got woodland to explore, countryside walks on the doorstep, a swimming pool, games facilities and comfortable accommodation to return to, there’s no pressure to organise an outing every day. That can be particularly valuable when you’re travelling with several dogs, young children or a larger group. Everyone can enjoy the holiday at their own pace, without every day needing to revolve around a car journey.
And if the weather doesn’t cooperate? The indoor pool and other facilities give you options beyond pulling on a waterproof and heading for the coast.
What should you look for in a dog-friendly cottage?
If you’re comparing places for your next holiday, it’s worth looking beyond the words “dog-friendly” and asking a few practical questions:
How many dogs can you bring? Check whether there’s a limit and whether exceptions are possible.
Are there additional charges? These can add up when you’re travelling with more than one dog.
Where can you walk? Is there space to explore directly from the accommodation, or will you need to drive every time?
What restrictions apply? Check the property’s rules so you know what to expect before you arrive.
What is provided? Bowls, throws and other essentials can make travelling much easier.
Will the humans enjoy it, too? Comfortable accommodation and useful facilities matter just as much when you’re planning a week away.
The right choice will depend on your dogs, your group and the sort of holiday you want. But if freedom, space and being able to bring all your dogs matter to you, these are details worth considering carefully.
A place for the whole pack
At Helsbury Park, we believe a dog-friendly holiday should be about more than finding somewhere that will let you bring your pets.
It’s about having the freedom to explore, the space to enjoy the countryside and the comfort of knowing that everyone — two-legged and four-legged alike — can have a genuinely good time. With almost 100 acres to discover, no additional charge for dogs, no fixed maximum number and facilities for people as well as pets, Helsbury offers a different kind of holiday: one where you can spend time together without constantly having to go somewhere else.
Because when the dogs are happy, the people are comfortable and there’s plenty to enjoy right on the doorstep, the whole pack can settle into holiday mode.
