Sun, Sea and Cornish Ice Cream

No trip to the Cornish coast is complete without a delicious and refreshing ice cream. In Cornwall you are never short of options, no beachside café is complete without an ice cream stand, perfect after a brisk dip in the sea or a sunbathe on the beach. Cornwall is lucky enough to have a host of ice cream companies, all striving to make the best quality frozen treats.

Callestick Farm

Callestick Farm is an award winning family business, owned by the Parker family. Sebastian Parker, the managing director of the Farm, tells us that his “Grandmother bought Callestick Farm in 1935” and his “father started farming here in 1953”. The family still run the Cornwall based business demonstrating true passion for the craft. They even have over 30 award winning ice creams and sorbets! In true Cornish fashion, they have a series of Clotted Cream flavour ice creams, ranging from clotted cream vanilla, clotted cream and strawberries and clotted cream and fudge. Their more adventurous flavours include, Jaffa Cake, Millionaire Shortbread and Toffee Apple. They also make sorbets, including, Blood Orange, Elderflower and, my personal favourite, Mango.

Treleavens

Dating back to 2002, Treleavens is a “luxury Cornish ice cream” business, who “create ice cream and sorbets which are high quality and taste great”. They have won more than 20 top industry awards and supply, not only to Cornwall, but to Devon and Somerset as well. Their products are made using the best, locally sourced milk and are dedicated to using the finest ingredients. They create incredible flavours such as, Butterscotch and Pecan, and Sticky Toffee Fudge, they also have more traditional flavours like Chocolate, Mint-Choc-Chip, and Cornish Vanilla. They make Raspberry and Mango sorbets and even vegan ice cream in Chocolate and Vanilla. Those are examples of flavours you can buy in shops, but in restaurants, they provide even more options like Lemon and Elderflower sorbet, Orange and Mascarpone ice cream and Speculoos vegan ice cream.

Kelly’s Ice Cream

Kelly’s ice cream is probably one of the most well know Cornish brands. I always remember the Kelly’s ice cream vans on the beach and getting a Mint-Choc-Chip ice cream with a flake, and I’m sure many people have similar memories. With locally sourced milk and cream, Kelly’s is made in Bodmin and beloved all over Cornwall. Their classic ice cream can be bought in flavours such as Eton Mess, Banana Split, and of course, Clotted Cream. They also make soft ice cream which pairs perfectly with a chocolaty flake, or as I always had, a fudge stick. They even have a partnership with Bumblebee Conservation Trust to help protect the beautiful natural world around us.
