Lydford Gorge – doggy day out

Lydford Gorge, nestled on the western edge of Dartmoor, offers a captivating blend of natural beauty and dog-friendly amenities. It is a fantastic destination for a day out with your canine companion.

The soft sounds of the River Lyd and the lush greenery of the temperate rainforest create a mindful atmosphere. The tranquillity and serenity allow for meditation and relaxation amongst nature. The gorge has earned a three paw-print rating from the National Trust as a result of its dog-friendliness. Dogs are welcome throughout the site, including indoor areas like the tea-room and bookshop, provided they are kept on a short lead.

The adventure begins with the 3-mile circular trail, which meanders through the gorge, passing the impressive 30-meter White Lady Waterfall and the swirling Devil’s Cauldron. The path, while enchanting, features steep slopes, narrow sections, and uneven surfaces, so sturdy footwear is essential. It’s worth noting that the Devil’s Cauldron viewing platform has steep, unguarded steps and is not recommended for dogs.

Midway through the walk, you can take a break at the Devil’s Cauldron tea-room. The staff are welcoming and water bowls and dog blankets are available to keep your furry friend comfortable while you enjoy one of their fabulous coffees.

Your dog will love the enclosed off-lead area near the Devil’s Cauldron entrance. This space, equipped with agility obstacles like jumps and tunnels, allows dogs to play freely and safely.

Lydford Gorge combines a mindful nature walk with thoughtful provisions for dogs, making it an enjoyable outing for both humans and their four-legged friends. Lydford is around a 45 minute drive from Helsbury back up the A30. It’s a great place to stop on your way down or on the way home.
