Spotting Otters in Cornwall: A Hidden Wildlife Success Story

When visiting Cornwall, it’s easy to focus on the dramatic coastline, sandy beaches and picturesque harbours — but there’s another, quieter resident you might not expect: otters.

These elusive creatures are now thriving across Cornwall, making the county one of the UK’s great wildlife success stories. Once pushed to the brink by pollution and habitat loss, otters have made a strong comeback and can now be found in most rivers, streams and wetlands across the region. While you’re unlikely to spot one easily — they’re shy and mostly active at dawn and dusk — chances are you’re never far from one when exploring Cornwall’s countryside.

And one of our guests recently managed to get these photos of one on the river here at Helsbury.

What makes Cornwall particularly special is how adaptable its otters are. Unlike many in other parts of the UK, Cornish otters often move between rivers and the sea, feeding in estuaries and even along the coastline. This means that whether you’re walking a wooded river valley or strolling along a quiet harbour, you could be in prime otter territory.

For visitors hoping to catch a glimpse, patience is key. Early mornings or evenings near calm stretches of water offer the best chance. Look out for subtle signs too — footprints in muddy banks or distinctive droppings (known as spraint) can hint that otters are nearby.

Despite their recovery, otters still face challenges. Road traffic and pollution remain the biggest threats, so their continued success depends on protecting Cornwall’s natural environment.

Even if you don’t see one, knowing these fascinating animals are part of the landscape adds something special to any visit. In Cornwall, the wild is never far away — and the otter is one of its most enchanting secrets.
