Helsbury Park Pond Wildlife Nature Walks

Our beautiful Flag Irises are in flower…

They began as a few small clumps but have now almost encircled the pond in a wonderful golden fringe. Irises share their name with the Greek goddess of the rainbow, a messenger goddess who also served nectar to the other deities.  The Iris actually has one of the highest rates of per day nectar production per flower. Hopefully this will help our pollinators in the orchard. The pond itself is a haven for mini-beasts too, both in and out of the water. You can often see rainbow coloured dragon and damsel flies hovering nearby, maybe someone will catch a glimpse of the goddess Iris on her golden wings one day.
